Historical Draped & Tailored Garments

DRAPED GARMENTS

1) Traditional draped garments worn by Buddhist monks.

This image was taken at a monastery in Rangoon, Burma. This style of draping is synonomous not only with images that we see of Buddhist monks, but also their belief system and minimalist lifestyle.

2) Tranquility by John William Godward
Created 1914

William Godward was an English painter of the Pre-Raphaelite/Neo-Classicist Eras. Much of his work consists of women in classical dress, specifically, draped garments. His source of inspiration for his artwork is said to be Ancient Rome and Greece, which explains the draped garments with which he tends to paint the women in his work.

3) Painting of: Berber Woman, Emile Vernet-Lecomte, French, 1870

This image is a portrayal of a Berber Queen of the Sahara, late 7th century, who led her people in battle against an attacking Arab nation, in 669 C.E. The draped, heavy fabric is typical of what Middle-Eastern cultures would have worn during that time period.

DRAPED/TAILORED

1) From Olyimpic Beijing Fashion Show, August 9, 2009; Designers(s) Xinhua/Li Mingfang

Like the previous one, this design is also an adaptation of China’s Warring States period from 475 B.C. to 221 B.C. and was part of the Olympic Beijing Fashion Show, August 9, 2008. I am including this to show the combination of tailored and drape in this single design.

2) French Guards in Uniform, as seen in 2008

The French and English are known for their exquisite tailoring skills, so it goes without question that the French government would do show no less for the uniforms of the French Guards, keeping watch at the Palais de l’Elysee. Everything from the collar and cuffs, down to the boots is tailored with precision and flair, as is to be expected from the French style of tailoring.

3) Viking Warrior, circa 1000 A.D.

Viking warrior in typical tailored garments, during the dark ages period. Such tailored garments provided both warmth to the warriors, as they traveled to various regions in battle, as well as mobility of the limbs, as opposed the restraints that their draped enemy counterparts might have experienced. This was during the period that the finest Viking Warriors were selected as members of The Varangians, personal bodyguards to the Byzantine Emperor.
